A plug valve uses a perforated plug as the closing member. Rotation of the plug stem opens or shuts off pipeline flow. Small‑size unpacked plug valves are also known as “cocks”. Most plugs are conical, while a few are cylindrical. The plug mates with the tapered bore inside valve body to form sealing surfaces. As one of the earliest valve designs, plug valves feature simple construction, fast operation and low flow resistance. In chemical piping systems, plug valves are frequently used together with hydraulic control valves and lined fluorine butterfly valves such as model D71F4‑10C and D371F4‑10C wafer‑style butterfly valves.

1. Working Principle of Plug Valve
Conventional plug valves achieve sealing through direct contact between precision‑machined metal plug and valve body. Traditional designs have limited sealing performance, high operating torque and easily‑worn sealing faces. They are generally limited to working pressure ≤1 MPa and nominal diameter below DN100. To broaden application range, lubricated plug valves were developed. Special lubricating grease is injected from the top of plug into clearance between tapered bore and plug, forming an oil film to reduce operating torque while improving sealing performance and service life. Lubricated plug valves can reach maximum working pressure up to 64 MPa, maximum operating temperature of 325 ℃ and nominal diameter up to DN600.
Plug valves come with multiple port configurations: straight‑way for simple shut‑off service; three‑way and four‑way types for fluid diversion and switching. The plug with through‑holes rotates around an axis perpendicular to flow passage to open or close flow paths, mainly used for media on‑off control in pipes and equipment.

3. Structural Classification of Plug Valves
By structural style: compression‑type plug valve, self‑sealing plug valve, packed plug valve, lubricated plug valve.
By port configuration: straight‑way plug valve, three‑way plug valve, four‑way plug valve.
Common aliases: threaded packed plug valve, flanged packed plug valve, cock, cross‑cock, gland plug cock.
4. Installation & Maintenance Notes
Reserve sufficient clearance at installation site for full handle rotation;
Plug valves must NOT be used for throttling service;
Plug valves fitted with gear / actuator drives shall be mounted in upright position.
